FAQs

  • You can still have an internal examination whilst on your period and we have done this many times. We have wipes and tissues and sink nearby so it isnt a problem. If you are on a heavy day and you would rather not, there are ways for us to access your pelvic floor externally on that day, if you would prefer. Just let us now on the day.

  • Yes, absolutely. We know it can be difficult to find a whole hour to yourself without having to do a feed etc so we can accommodate a baby within our session. If it is an initial appointment, we usually will talk to you as we get a history for the first 20 mins so that is a good opportunity to feed/cuddle a baby. We will usually endeavour to pop the baby down for the last 40 mins but this doesn't always work out and we can still assess you whilst holding a baby if need be. You can bring a buggy/carry cot into the treatment room with you or we can pop a blanket on the floor.

  • If you are having any aches or pains such as pelvic girdle pain, you can come at any point of your pregnancy. If you would like a pregnancy MOT or pelvic floor check then anytime during 2nd or 3rd trimester is best. If you would like to learn perineal massage and pelvic floor prep pre-birth from 35 weeks onwards is perfect for this.

  • If you have an ongoing condition such as urinary incontinence, prolapse, overactive bladder, sexual dysfunction or pelvic pain then it is usually an average of 5-6 sessions to improve symptoms and reach your goals. We recommend booking a few follow ups in advance to ensure you have effective care. Remember appointments can always be cancelled if we don't need them, or plans change.

We often see clients at regular intervals at the 1st phase of treatment, then space out the last few sessions as you become independent and improve.

  • Unfortunately we don't work with Bupa or Axa health insurance.

Niamh is registered with Cigna, WPA, and Aviva health insurance.

However, we don't do direct billing. We can can provide you with a receipt with practitioner details including HCPC registration number so you can re-imburse. The insurers above will accept that but we recommend calling to double check with your insurer prior to booking.

  • Yes. Pregnancy adds some strain on the pelvic floor muscles so it is good to have them assessed after pregnancy. There may also be strain added after an emergency c section if you were in labour at any point. Lastly issues such as bladder urgency and painful sex often arise after caesarean and we can help with that, via a pelvic floor check.

Lastly, the pelvic floor is part of your core and effective core rehab after a c section should start with the pelvic floor muscles.

  • The ideal time to have a postnatal review is 6-8 weeks post vaginal or caesarean birth. This allows enough time for swelling, lochia or scar healing to settle before we do a hands-on assessment. However, you are welcome to come along sooner if you have any concerns that you would like assessed sooner or if you are experiencing pelvic pain post birth.

  • There is on street parking in the surrounding area. You have to pay between 10am-2pm via the RINGO app. It is free to park on surrounding streets outside those hours.

  • Our Pelvic Health Physiotherapists have the skills to assess your pelvic floor muscles. This is the best way for us to assess those muscles and tell you how they are functioning. This can be done via an internal exam vaginally( or sometimes rectally) or we can assess these muscle to some degree via external assessment.

  • Pelvic floor dysfunction is when they are not working to their optimum. You may be experiencing pelvic pain, Bladder issues like leaking, pelvic organ prolapse or painful sex.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is extremely useful if you are pregnant or just after having a baby. Maybe you are experiencing new pelvic floor symptoms that were not there before or have worsened, which is annoying and affecting you doing the things that you love.

Pelvic floor physiotherapy is also for men who experiencing bladder symptoms, pelvic pain or erectile dysfunction.

  • We have a chat for about 20 mins to get a thorough history and learn about your symptoms/goals.

We let you know what an assessment entails and check you are happy to proceed.

We examine your alignment, hip and pelvic joints and/or abdominal muscles

An internal exam involves getting you comfy (no stirrups) and using 1 or 2 fingers to check the muscles

Unfortunately lots of our clients can carry experience from the past (which they may or may not realise) which make internal exams feel daunting. So it is important to know that we provide space for them to let us know, so we can accommodate for this and we are very used to this..

After assessment, we may do some hands-on techniques, give you some bespoke advice on how to get back to your best, some education and exercises. There may be some follow up appointments afterwards, to help you reach your goal. Or you can benefit from your own independent work at home or seeing one of our colleagues within the community via a referral.

  • At the root of all stress-related illness is a dysregulated nervous system with a tendency toward a Fight, Flight, Freeze or Fawn response and thus imbalanced stress hormones, such as cortisol. Somatic therapy works with the body as a “bottom-up” approach, beginning with the body rather than the mind. This approach is best for regulation as it teaches the nervous system safety, allowing it to release stored emotion and tension and come back to a state of balance. Somatic therapy sessions include a combination of movement and breathwork techniques, allowing your body to lead the session as it opens up and releases. As it releases, the nervous system can regulate its stress hormone production and relearn what balance feels like.
